At the age of 33, Eckson Banda walked into the classroom at Lusaka Vocational Training College (LVTC). He did not mind that he was the oldest in the class and was determined to attend each lesson with a full smile and energy. His journey had not been straightforward, as younger Eckson had hit a setback with education - he was on his way to university on a full scholarship, but it fell through. With disappointment, he thought about what was next for him, what he would do with his passion and a burning desire to serve.
When he came across the WATER FOR WATER (WfW) Zambia bursary advert in one of the group platforms, that was it for him. An opportunity to further his education and to work in the WASH Sector. He enrolled as a plumbing student at LVTC in 2023. To him, it was more than plumbing; it was a stepping stone, bringing him closer to achieving his dream.

The WfW bursary offered him an opportunity to support his family and himself. He was able to earn a living soon after graduation; this qualification landed him his first project in Shangombo, Western Province, at a water trust. It earned him the credibility and trust to deliver, which opened doors to projects in six provinces and improved access to water for over 400 people.

This experience gave him the confidence to start his own company, Deplat Water Engineers, which he mentored and employed six (6) graduates from LVTC for a 1 year and 6 months, guiding them to identify their areas of strength and offering them practical experience, helping shape the next generation of professionals.

His mentorship extends beyond the workplace. Through a WhatsApp group of plumbers and water operators, Eckson shares opportunities and advice. One of his mentees, Martin Kalimangai, used this encouragement to start his own business, creating employment for other young Zambians with vocational training.

Eckson’s story highlights the power of vocational training. For him, a plumbing certificate was more than a qualification. It was a game-changing opportunity that enabled him to support his family, run a business for over two years, and empower others to do the same.
